TRIP@WTHS'22 Session A

Naz Atabas

Naz Atabas joined TRIP as a sophomore at Abington Friends School. She is enthusiastic about her track and field career, and spending quality time with friends and family. Naz is curious about science and has a deep interest in how living organisms grow and behave. For her TRIP project, she tested risk-taking behaviors presented in fruit flies.

Saanvi Gupta

Saanvi Gupta joined TRIP as a junior at Downingtown High School East Campus. At school, Saanvi competes as part of her school’s TSA and HOSA chapters and Academic Team. Saanvi also loves to dance and volunteers as a mentor in her VEX Robotics organization. She is interested in pursuing a career in women’s health, either in research or as an attending physician. For her TRIP project, Saanvi studied the impact of three fertility medications, Metformin, Maca, and Vitex, on female fertility.

Jenan Hazazi

Jenan Hazazi joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a junior at William Tennent High School. As she has traveled around the world, she has become quite enthusiastic in all things of the arts (specifically realism painting), and language learning, with an aspiration to become a polyglot. Jenan also has a profound passion in STEM, specifically medicine, with her favorite classes and programs being Anatomy and Physiology H, AP Biology, and Robotics. For her TRIP project, she  was inspired by the growing global health concern of obesity, and tested dietary alternatives for exercise.

Kevin Lobo

Kevin Lobo joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a sophomore at Wissahickon High School. He moved to America from India when he was four years old, and he has been interested in science throughout his life. He loves to play tennis and soccer and debate for his school. Kevin also has a passion for programming, often participating in hackathons and competitive programming competitions. For his TRIP project, he explored the effects of nicotine and ginseng on sociability in both developing and adult fruit flies.

Eri Maeda

Eri Maeda joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a Junior at the Baldwin School. Eri is a clarinet player in the Philadelphia Sinfonia and in her school jazz band. She enjoys reading books about sociology, like The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Her interests lie in neuroscience and chemistry, which led her to test the effects of isolation on aggression and social anxiety. She would like to thank her parents and sister for their support.

Ella Masino

Ella Masino joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a junior at West Deptford High School. Outside of school, Ella enjoys trying new foods, spending time with animals, and watching movies. She loves new experiences and meeting people with similar interests, which prompted her interest in the TRIP program. While at TRIP, she tested the effects of electronic cigarette juice on intestinal inflammation and fertility of adult fruit flies.

Mahi Patel

Mahi Patel joined TRIP as a junior at Bensalem High School.  Mahi is a third degree black belt in martial arts.  She loves reading, journaling, and dancing.  Currently, her favorite class in school is chemistry.  For her TRIP project, Mahi sought to determine whether Olly vitamins could counteract the negative effects of sleep deprivation on stress.

Niki Wang

Niki Wang joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a freshman at William Tennent High School. She was born in North Carolina, but has moved to several places like Virginia, New York, China, and finally, Pennsylvania. She shows a passion for science, enjoys playing volleyball, and spends most of her time helping out at her parents’ restaurant. What inspired her TRIP project was her parents’ constant and persistent reminders of what the popular “miracle” Asian herb, Red Ginseng, could do to help energize the body. So, she asked the question, “Can Red Ginseng help counteract the effects of sleep deprivation on health?”

Shakira Ali

Shakira Ali joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a sophomore at Council Rock South High School. As a hobby, she is a food scientist and constantly explores different flavors and textures with her baking and cooking and loves to play with her school’s orchestra. With biology and chemistry being her favorite subjects, Shakira hopes to pursue a career in STEM one day. For her TRIP project, she tested the impact of energy drinks, specifically Celsius, with the addition of Melatonin on cognition and the memory of individuals.

Sanjana Balaji joined TRIP as a sophomore at Garnet Valley High School. Sanjana enjoys playing and teaching piano, dancing, and playing tennis. Her favorite subjects are chemistry and psychology, and she enjoys tutoring. For her TRIP project, she tested the impact of Ibuprofen and Tylenol on the memory and learning capabilities of developing brains.

Sameeksha Panda

Sameeksha Panda joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a junior at Methacton High School. Sameeksha, who lived in India for 7 years, is passionate about dancing, traveling around the world, and reading the hours away at Barnes & Nobles. At school, she actively engages in the Medicine & Science Club and Biology Olympiad, where she explores her passions for the STEM field, especially regarding biomedical technology. This passion drew Sameeksha to TRIP, where she used the amazing hands-on experience, as well as a prior interest in contaminated water, to determine the effects of sodium nitrate on the diversity of the fruit fly gut microbiome.

Diya Parekh joined TRIP as a junior at William Tennent High School. Diya loves listening to music and playing viola and guitar, as well as reading. In school, Diya explores her love for science by co-founding and running her school’s Health Science Exploration Club. For her TRIP project, she tested the impact of licorice on flies in the pupal and larval stages.

Erin Suter

Erin Suter joined TRIP as a junior at Central Bucks High School East. In her free time, she enjoys playing the violin, swimming competitively, and volunteering at a local hospital. Erin is a conservation ambassador through the Wildlife Leadership Academy and loves learning about the environment and what she can do to help it. Her favorite subject in school is biology and she is a member of the environmental club. For her TRIP project, Erin compared the effects of vape juice and nicotine to see how they affected sociability.

Keith Thompson joined TRIP as a junior at William Tennent High School. Keith loves running track, baking, watching sports, and spending time with friends. In school, Keith finds himself most interested in Anatomy and Chemistry, and plans to pursue a medical career. For his TRIP project, he tested the effects of quercetin, a flavonol found in apples, on learning and memory in developing brains.

Matthew Uppani joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a junior at Methacton High School. Matthew loves science, biking, traveling, playing tennis, playing piano, and watching movies. Additionally, he has a passion to serve the community and volunteers at various non-profit organizations. Matthew is actively involved in science fair, and he hopes to pursue a career in medicine in the future. For his TRIP project, he sought to determine whether fenugreek can counteract the detrimental effects of atorvastatin on blood sugar.

Nihitha Vallabhaneni

Nihitha Vallabhaneni joined TRIP@WTHS’22 as a junior at Garnet Valley High School. During her free time, you can always find her watching the NBA, hanging out with her friends, or playing chess. In school, her favorite class is AP Psychology which inspired her research for TRIP. For her TRIP project, Nihitha tested the impact of different doses of iron on the memory and cognitive functionality of fruit fly brains.
