Hi! My name is Taahzje Ellis, and I am a soon to be junior at Murrell Dobbins Career & Technical Education High School. I am in my school's biotechnology shop so I am already a little familiar with bio-tech in general. In my shop I have done a lot of experiments from chromatography to the separation of DNA and bacteria. Besides that I'm involved in my school's TSTL club which stands for Today's Scholars Tomorrow's Leaders. In this club we discuss the problems in the world and share our opinions and discuss ways to improve the problem from the student perspective. Currently, we are producing a documentary on the root causes of violence, especially in diverse and lower income communities. Besides that, I am in the Alumni student network club and student senate. At first I wasn't into the idea of joining clubs, but now I really enjoy the setting and the things that you can learn with the opportunities that they can provide for you. I first found out about TRIP through Steppingstones and I decided to get involved in it because I was looking for internships that could teach me things and open a door for more opportunities for me in the future. Something that was really important to me was to do a program that introduces me to a new kind of experiment and one that can offer me more hands-on lab experience to help me reach my career goals of eventually working in labs. In just week 1 of TRIP, I am very excited to continue my TRIP journey and I look forward to what I will be doing next and cannot wait for everything that is to come. Though at first it was a bit challenging due to me not having taken chemistry yet, but after starting the program I've improved and learned lots of new things.

Hi everyone! My name is Megan Xie, and I am a rising junior at Lower Moreland High School. I am involved in my school’s science club, where I participate in science fairs and PJAS, and math club, and I am very excited to co-lead the coding club this fall. I am also a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Ambassador Program at my school. Additionally, I play cello in my school’s orchestra and chamber strings ensemble, and I occasionally accompany my school’s choir on the piano.
One of my hobbies is playing the piano, which I have been doing for over ten years. I always spend my free time practicing (I sometimes drive my family crazy with my perfectionism), and I really enjoy performing and competing. I feel that classical music can convey so many emotions that words cannot, which is why I love expressing myself through the music I play. I first heard about TRIP in seventh grade, and since then, I have been eagerly waiting to apply; it now feels kind of surreal to actually be a part of the TRIP family. Science has always been my favorite school subject, whether it be in the form of the double helix DNA model that my seventh grade teacher showed my class or the bubbles that form from yeast undergoing alcoholic fermentation. I find that science always has the answers to questions that rise from my curiosity, and it fascinates me to see how scientific breakthroughs can revolutionize the world we live in. Today was my first day of TRIP. I got to use a micropipette for the first time, and I used my newly-acquired micropipetting skills to make fly food in preparation for our first independent project. Everyone is extremely friendly, and I can’t wait to get to know more about them. At the end of today’s session, I got to bring home a vial of flies, which is currently sitting on my windowsill. I have been watching them fly around and eat their food, and I am more than excited to come back in two days.
Hi everyone! My name is Ashli Lao and I’m a rising senior at North Penn High School. A little bit about me: I have two younger brothers, my favorite color is orange, and I love to make playlists and try new foods! At North Penn I’m involved in our EnAct (Environmental Action) club, Mini-THON/High Schools Against Cancer club, class cabinet, and swim team. From planning prom to planting trees to creating fundraisers for childhood cancer, these activities allow me to collaborate with others and create events that give back to the community. Within the EnAct club, we have a monthly newsletter called “The Green Gazette” which discusses environmental news, eco-tips, and local sustainable features. When it comes to school, my favorite classes would have to be chemistry and environmental science. I have always enjoyed my science classes, but these particular courses displayed science in a new way. Not only does science explain the world around us, but it also provides solutions to problems such as pollution and disease. At the end of this school year, I worked in a qualitative analysis lab in chemistry where I separated and identified ions in an unknown mixture. I loved the independence of completing my own experiments with the collaborative nature of troubleshooting with my friends. TRIP combines all these positive aspects of learning into one experience where I can gain research skills, meet new people, and hone in on my interests in the scientific field. I am beyond excited to take off on this adventure and experience all that TRIP has to offer!
Hello everyone! My name is Charity Robbins, and I am a rising senior at George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Sciences. My school is located on Temple’s campus, so I am looking forward to being in a very familiar area this summer. I am very much involved in my school community. I am the President of NHS for the upcoming year, I founded a science club with my Chemistry teacher, and am the team captain of my FTC Robotics club. I also tutor Chemistry, Physics, English, History, and Spanish. One of my greatest passions in life is making STEM more inclusive, and showing my little sister that she can do anything that she puts her mind to. Outside of the classroom I can be found getting boba with friends, watching Glee, obsessing over Hamilton, and most importantly, listening to music.
From micro-pipetting to making my own fly food for my introductory project, so many skills have been acquired in such a small amount of time. Just in the first week of TRIP, I have learned so much! From micro-pipetting to making my own fly food for my introductory project, so many skills have been acquired in such a small amount of time. I really enjoy how much the instructors push us to figure things out on our own. I find that in retrospect, this will help me a lot. I am excited to see what the next couple of weeks has in store for me. I am looking forward to learning more about our natural world with all of my peers and having one of my MANY questions about life answered through my independent research project. Hello! My name is Tejasvi Pathipati and I am a rising senior at Downingtown STEM Academy. I was born in Detroit, Michigan, six months after we moved to Bensalem, then King of Prussia, and finally landed in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania where I currently live with my parents and younger sister.
At school I am the Business Leader for Cam-a-thon s a 12-hour dance marathon that raises money for Cure-4-Cam, a non-profit organization focused on supporting research grants and new clinical studies for children who battle leukemia. This year we raised 54,000 dollars! I am also heavily involved in my school’s HOSA chapter and placed 1st at the State Leadership Conference. I just returned from the HOSA International Leadership Conference where I had to opportunity to meet people from all over the world interested in medicine and learn more about careers in medicine. I also serve at my school’s NHS chapter with over 250 hours of service. Beyond school, I enjoy volunteering, mentoring, and exploring the healthcare field. I am the Outreach and Social Media Head for a student-led nonprofit, 3 Tiny Bones, (501)(c)(3). This organization aims to destigmatize hearing loss through helping, educating, advocating, and reaching youth. on building partnerships with local businesses such as audiology centers. I contact these businesses to partner with our organization to spread our message and educate youth. I volunteer at the McGlinn Cancer Institute at Reading Hospital weekly, assisting nurses, answering calls, assisting patients with necessities, and stocking supply carts. To explore my interest in the healthcare field, I shadow my Pediatrician at Healthy Steps Pediatrics every week. This experience allows me to learn about different conditions and treatment plans, a typical workday for a pediatrician, and the “behind the scenes'' of being a doctor. Additionally, I am a student mentor for a 6th grade robotics team. With over 5 years of experience working in a robotics team, I aid the middle school teams with game strategy, the engineering design process, and teamwork skills. Throughout the school year I am involved with Diwali Food Drive as the youth volunteer leader where I take charge of fundraising money/food and reaching out to the local business for donations. This past year, the Diwali Food Drive donated to local food banks such as Chester County Food Bank and Lord's Panty, but also to College Food Banks such as the Blue Hen Food Bank at the University of Delaware. For the past 12 years I have been learning Bharatanatyam, a form of Indian Classical Dance, which serves as a great stress reliever especially during exams, and recently started choreographing my own dances! Hey everyone! My name is Rachel Glantzberg, and I come from the Academy of Allied Health and Science in Neptune, NJ. In school, I am the president of our Key Club and PERIOD club, a field hockey player, and member of our science club. Outside of school, I serve in my town's EMS Cadet Corps, volunteer at a horse therapy center, coordinate a coalition called "Equality Period., NJ", work at Six Flags, and am a research assistant for a computational biology lab. I love being busy and engaging in work surrounding the menstrual movement and medicine! I am so excited to be involved with TRIP to improve on my lab-based research skills. As soon as I heard about TRIP, I was really interested in the opportunity to begin my own research project. I think working with flies will be a challenge, but a rewarding challenge nonetheless! For a little bit more about me, I love to run (right now I'm training for a 10k), sing in the shower (I am a HUGE Swiftie), eat (it's truly a passion -- HipCityVeg in Philly is one of my favorite places to eat), and roam around cities like a main character (I am a city girl stuck in a suburban world). |
