Jagger Azvolinsky: Who Am I? by Jagger Azvolinsky

6/16/2020

Hello everybody! My name is Jagger Azvolinsky. I am currently a junior at William Tennent High School in Warminster, Pennsylvania. I was born in Bucks County in 2002 and moved from Richboro to Southampton in 2007.
My interest in science dates back very far. From a young age, I expressed curiosity in the world that was around me. I began to wonder and think about how things work the way they do, and how our natural environment around us was built from scratch. I read a lot about science in order to find an answer to these questions, but I was shocked when I realized that most of them lacked a complete answer! This made me even more curious and inspired me to look further, which brought me all the way to where I am now.

Outside of the classroom, I love to play Ice hockey. I play for the Wissahickon Warriors 18U team, a summer tournament team, and my high school (even though I took a brief hiatus from that this season). I also like to play the bass guitar, travel, listen to music, watch movies, and read.

The Beginning of My Journey by Evelyn Thomas

Hello everyone and welcome to my first EVER blog post! My name is Evelyn Thomas, and I’m a sophomore at North Penn High School. I’ll start off with a short introduction about me. Music is a big part of my life. I play the violin, piano, and sing! I am also a Spotify freak and I make new playlists almost every single week. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family and goofing off with them. Netflix is my addiction (currently rewatching That 70’s Show). These are just some fun facts about me.

Now onto my love for science. Ever since I was a little kid, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor. I used to play make believe and diagnose my stuffed animals. This love for medicine and science has carried on to this day and I hope to achieve my goal. Biology is definitely my favorite subject because there is an unending amount of knowledge you can gain. It explains how things all around us work; everything from animal species and their evolution to the cells that make up our body.

When I found out about TRIP I was so excited because it was a chance for me to get a hands on experience working in a lab. I also wanted to get involved in the TRIP program because I've never gotten the chance to perform research where my own question drives the experiment. I hope that through this independent research I will become a better problem solver and, overall, a better scientist!
This week was my second week of TRIP and so far, it has been very eventful. Just this week, we finally got to work with the flies, and let me tell you, it was an interesting first experience. This week, we learned how to sort them in terms of sex and then we used what we sorted to use in the behavioral assay we were assigned to test. Since this was my first time EVER working with fruit flies, I have to admit, I was a bit nervous, but it got better the longer I worked with them. Hopefully the next time I have to sort them I won’t take as much time and I’ll be more confident!

That’s all for now, signing out!

The Beginning! by Cindy Tran

Hello! My name is Cindy Tran and I am currently a senior attending Central High School. I was born and raised in Philly. Although I live in the Northeast, I’ve gone to school in the city since 5th grade, so over the years I’ve explored and familiarized myself with the city. My favorite spots are either Gira Green or the Rail Park! I learned about these green spaces over the summer through my Environmental Science professor. I ended up writing and op-ed on the positive effects of green spaces in large, dense cities like Philly and have been intrigued by green spaces ever since.

Some fun facts about me are that I'm extremely clumsy and trip over my own feet more often than I'd like, but ironically the only sport I actively participate in is figure skating. I also love to volunteer, especially at community events like marathons (which I've kept my Saturday mornings free for). A big part of my life is the college access program I am part of, called Philadelphia Futures, aimed towards helping low-income, first generation to college students (this program honestly changed my life.)

I love to try new things, so I have a lot of interests! I’m passionate about all types of art, ranging from visual arts (painting, sketching) to crafts (crocheting, knitting), woodwork, sculpture, and even video editing. Because I have so many interests, I attempted to narrow down the things I like to prepare for my future career by trying out clubs and different activities, knocking out the ones I didn’t like. I was in a club focused on studio production, learned about history with the National parks Service, joined a Law and Justice club, and Girls Who Code. This plan backfired as I enjoyed all these activities, and have found myself stuck on what I should do next. My journey of discovering what my future may be is also one of the reasons I decided to join TRIP. I work best with hands-on learning, and I want to continue growing in the field of STEM. This year, I wasn't able to fit a science class into my schedule but I still wanted a set time that I could dedicate to improving my science skills. Truthfully, I always struggled trying to understand concepts in my previous science classes, but when these concepts were actually applied (in lab experiments) they made much more sense in my brain.

Two weeks of TRIP have already passed, and I hate to admit that I’ve spent too much of that time looking at larvae munch away. I’m excited to continue on this journey!

A New Chapter with TRIP by Kaya Horton

I’m planning to go to college and study chemistry to become a cosmetic chemist. I’m very interested in skincare and makeup; my anatomy class has taught me a lot about the integumentary system and I’m interested in understanding the effects of  acne and other skin issues and how to fix them or at least lessen the symptoms. I’m just a typical teenager that does typical teenager things, but now it feels like I’m starting a new chapter in my life.

My name is Kaya Horton, I’m a senior at Pottstown Senior High school. I was born in Pennsylvania but I moved to Connecticut in 2013 and came back to PA in October 2018. I’m the oldest of my three half siblings. I have two cats named Toby and Phoebe. French fries are my favorite food. My all time favorite TV shows are Friends and That 70s Show. I’m passionate about art and animals. My first job was working on a farm in Connecticut. I love to draw, paint, write and do makeup!

I wanted to be involved with TRIP from the first day I heard about the opportunity and every week since I filled out my application for TRIP has felt so unreal, from the interview to orientation to the first session. Because of the career path I plan to take, I think this is the perfect first step to take to help me achieve my future goals.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity to network and gain experience for my future endeavors. TRIP has been a lot of fun so far. I’ve met some great new people and I’m learning so many new things. Sometimes things get frustrating but that’s all a part of the learning process!! I’m looking forward to the following weeks.

The One Where He Says Hi by Alexander Yum

HI GUYS I’M ALEX YUM AND I’M VERY EXCITED TO BE HERE. For the next few weeks, you will witness the obnoxious comedy program that is my life. Except it’s not gonna be very funny because there may be a lot of dead flies and I’m scared of both death and flies (circa 2/1/20).
I’m currently a junior at the great(ish) Wissahickon High School. Science and math have always piqued my interest and at the age of five I boldly proclaimed that I wanted to “be a doctor” without knowing what that entailed. Now, with more *self proclaimed* maturity, I simply wish to find my passion that may lie in STEM, though, I still sometimes meddle with the idea of pursuing medicine.

In case you’re dying to know more about who I am, here’s a few things that define me. I was born in Tennessee and am proud to say that I had a Southern accent until I was 5 when I moved to a little half-Amish half-modern town (both cars and horse drawn buggies) on the outskirts of Pittsburgh before moving here in third grade. The things I love in life can be condensed into family, friends, food, fun, and *sometimes* sleep (we have a love-hate relationship). I play tennis for my school varsity team, rip the outer layer off of soft pretzels because it just tastes like burnt bread, and picked up the trombone in 4th grade because it was big, shiny, and fun to slide.

I wanted to get involved in the TRIP Initiative program because of two reasons:
1) I find research itself very intriguing but have not had many opportunities to partake in it. I wish to research and work in the lab as much as possible before college so that I can build experience and interest, and this program provides a perfect opportunity for me to do so.
Picture
2) I will probably pursue a career in STEM, but I'm not exactly sure what I want to do. For all I know, my passion could lie in hypothesis-based research, and this program could provide a medium for me to find my passion.
Picture
As my biology teacher would put it, this program gives me “a lot of bang for the buck” and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the weeks to come!
